Noah never gets lost. Never. Ever. So where the fuck was he and why was he lost ? It was the fourth time he stood still, scanning the horizon with the hope of finding any reference point he could use, but it was no use. His mind couldn't track his location. What's the fucking use of being a mutant if your ability keeps fucking everything up ? Shit. He kicked a can, his hands buried in the pockets of his jeans, and sighed. This was bad. He had promised Gage he'd be back by 7, and according to his cellphone - which couldn't find a signal - it was currently 6:30. He'd be in deep shit if he was late. Gage was one of the last people on earth you wanted to get angry. The little guy wasn't the most patient person in the world, and especially loathed waiting for Noah. But this was hardly his fault, right ? He simply had no clue where he was. The streets still looked like the common New York streets, but it had suddenly gotten really dark. Furthermore, the silence was nerve-racking.

And give us a blueprint of the building, while you're at it! (Robots can do multiple things at once, right?) A floor plan could come in handy during a messy escape. Sure, Noah was a tracker, but it wouldn't hurt to be ultra-prepared. Especially if you're in Genesis Whatever (Something Biblical and Mysterious Probably Inc.), which is guarded by killer robots.

She gave Noah the thumbs up while the robot started to answer. To both questions at the same time, of course. Good boy. Genesis Incorporated was designed to make the world a better place- (Same old shit, she thought.) -and robots were created to be the future of human kind. Yeah, tell me about it! The purpose wasn't for the robot to actually respond but as an obedient machine, it came with an answer for that too. Meanwhile, a map had popped out, all shiny and blue. A hologram.

Pisces:

Interesting, said Noah, stroking his invisible beard and pretending he could make out what the blueprint said. It seemed so very logical in movies, but apparently that was another aspect that Hollywood had lied about. Blueprints were unreadable. Way too complex. Luckily, Hollywood also had an answer for this particular problem that Noah was willing to try out. Enhance! he yelled at the hologram. He didn't say what it had to enhance, nor for what purpose, but it just sounded right.

Cats and do- nope, no dogs :

The hologram was now a plan and you could definitely say that some walls were thicker than others. What a discovery, right! Then a bunch of moving yellow lines showed up, making the plan denser. But now that you were able to tell which line defined a corridor and which one a room, maybe it really was enhancement. Maybe it's the vent system? She said with no real conviction. No it's not, said the bot, interrupting his monologue. They are the patrol paths. At last, something useful! 8D

English Inquisition:

Patrol paths? Noah repeated. What kind of patrols? Robot patrols? Are they still used? Is this facility still active? He had a point. The facility did look abandoned. Except for the robots (and each other), they had yet to run into another living being (all right, fair enough, robots don't count as living beings, but Noah had seen enough movies to at least consider them as sentient and thus "living").

Sorcery:

The bot was, well, a bot so he answered each and every question in the right order. Security patrols. All guards are robots. I don't understand what you mean by "still used". This facility is self-sufficient in order to operate in case of human failure: Mr Johnson gave his instructions before he left. So basically, the robots would do their work until energy failure. So much for the human race. And what happened to the people? I mean the people of the world... Humans? She asked.

Human kind has been annihilated. The bot had stated this so matter-of-factly, so devoid of emotion (no kidding, it's a robot), that it hadn't even come as a great shock. The answer had to be expected really, after driving through a wasteland devoid of any human life. Noah and Unknown had probably known it all along. The important thing was that they weren't annihilated yet, and that they had one ultimate purpose left: ... finding Noah some fucking pants.

Pour me rappeler 8) :

There. Now that you've heard it out loud, what are you gonna do, huh? Unknown wasn't sure of what their next move should be. The bot didn't seem to actually see them as a threat. Why? No no wait, we don't care why. Find a way out, that's all. And some pants. Is there a locker room somewhere? And a mess? Show us on your plan. And don't forget the patrol paths. Right to the point. And fingers crossed. That might help. Might.

Simba:

And help it did ! The handy little bot did exactly as was asked of him. Damn. We're supposed to learn this by heart ? He asked, pointing at the map. Don't you have a print option or something ? Being a tracker, you'd expect Noah to know how to read a map. And he could. He just wasn't good at remembering stuff. That was usually Gage's job. And Noah without Gage is like half a brain (though some would argue no brain at all, but don't tell him I said that). Certainly. A printed map came out of the bot's butt*.

*backside ; but I'm Noah's narrator and he was thinking "ew, it's coming out of his butt", so....

Zuzu:

The plan was so clear that a kid could have felt at home in here. Every room had a name and every patrol path had a timetable. Sweet. She said. It's really helpful, thank you. At your service. May I help you with something else? So devoted. So no brain. So lucky-you-are-to-have-come-across-me' robot. She almost came with the idea of bringing him with them but hey, you never know what happens when you ask a bot to do something he's not used to do. So, No, we're good. Aren't we? She looked at Noah.

Witchcraft:

A red light came out of the little robot's head and began to whirl as if it was a lighthouse. Unknown held her breath and... let it go. The bulb was very small and made no sound at all. Is it an alarm? She asked. Yes, she actually did. Should be, said the bot. But it appears not to work very well. Maybe because I haven't used it in 43 years 8 months 17 da– And so on till the millisecond I guess. Stop it! She shouted. Why the alarm? Ok, she knew why. But maybe they could block the process.

Mother:

Yeah! Why the alarm?! Noah's new robot friend had betrayed him. Is it cause he had asked it to come with them? Wasn't it allowed? Or was it being controlled by some kind of evil boss robot that stood way up in the robot hierarchy of this new robot governed society? (That's a lot of robots.) Turn it off, R2D2. Red lights frighten me.

Child:

At your service. Yes, that simple. But I'm afraid you're mistaken about me. I'm an Archivist unit. The R2D2s are engineering units. I've never met a single one. Unknown nodded slowly. Was he for real? And then, as if it was completely normal, like a casual conversation, he continued: May I help you with something else? Technology has its limits, right? That bot definitely reached his.

Noah laughed. That robot was hilarious. So there are actually R2D2s? I guess some nerds worked here. I'm not surprised. He stopped laughing when no one joined him in his mockery and coughed to clear his throat. Anywaaay. So you'll come with us? What do we call you? AU? Archi?

Woot:

The red light came out again but like the first time, nothing else happened. Unknown thought they were sooooo lucky to have met THIS robot. She sighed. He can't follow us! Geez, can't you get that? She said while the bot was telling his real name – a long list of numbers and letters. Stop it. She said and both the light and the humdrum speech died. At your service. May I– Shut up. At your service. Lucky, huh?! /palmface.

Red:

But he wanted the robot... Dammit. Those things were nifty. Unknown, less so. I mean, there wasn't anything explicitly wrong with her but... c'mon ! She was obviously on her period. And Noah couldn't handle women on their periods (though he was pretty sure no one really could). He just showed his usual pokerface in response to Unknown's aggression. A pokerface which was inaptly named as it didn't hide what he was thinking at all.

The sound of silence:

Ooookey, obviously he was annoyed. Or worse. But it really was impossible to bring the bot with them. Unless... If they were smart enough to manipulate the program... She thought for a second. Show me the limits of your area. She asked the bot. If – and I stress if – they were even more lucky, maybe their little fella could be part of the trip out.

Casper:

As soon as she asked, the robot beeped and booped and went on its merry way. Quick, follow it! Noah ran after it, still without pants. Perhaps they should've asked it to show them where the nearest lockers were. Or a shop, if a scientific facility was the kind of place where they had shops. Don't they sell T-shirts and shit like that for tourists?

Virgil :

Damn! She said. Of course the bot had to actually show the limits of his area. The thing was a complete idiot. If she could speak to the programmer... Anyway. Not helpful. They ran for at least five minutes before they got to a huge room, almost as huge as the first one with the giant bot. Except that this one looked like a museum entrance. Reception desk, chairs, magazines, trophies... The bot stopped abruptly and simply said : Here is my limit.

– Great. Thanks, buddy.
– I am not your buddy.
– Yeah... uhuu.. Thanks for that too...

Noah has got to agree here : the robot was a complete moron. Perhaps not the programmer's fault, but the lack of maintenance. When was the last time this thing had gotten an update, after all ? You gotta keep your software up-to-date, man ! That's the shitty thing about technology. He turned to Unknown. I'm gonna find me some pants. He pointed to the clothing section.

Hakuna Matata:

Noah was back in business 8) Pants and all. It just felt so much better to be wearing pants, honestly. Who wants to worry about their boxers falling to their ankles in the middle of a serious conversation ? No one. It might've been funny at first, but... no... really ; Noah was better in jeans. All right ! He rubbed his hands together. Let's get this party started and figure out where the hell the human population has gone to.

Blind Test:

If it pleases you, I can lead the way to the library and provide you a book to help you figure out anything you want, sir. Ooookay. So that was what he was doing all day long. It called him. That door, ladies and gentlemen, was fun.
